Landlords Responsibilities

Police in North London have uncovered a brothel operating out of apparently a normal privately rented property. According to the local newspapers, a neighbour had informed police that the flat recieved a lot of visitors and that there was noise at night. When police officers entered the property, they found a madam and 2 sex workers. The landlord apparently had no idea the property was being used as a brothel.

This incident comes as the Government plans new legislation on organised crime which could catch unwitting landlords in its net. The serious crime bill is aimed mainly at penalizing accountants, lawyers, financial advisers and other professional associates of criminal gangs.

However, the law could place a new on us on landlords to ensure that their properties are not being used for criminal activities, such as producing drugs. Those convicted of the new offence could face up to 5 years imprisonment.
